Slippery Elm. Got some?

Without any doubt if you’re into herbs you’ve heard of Slippery Elm. But if you’re new to the world of nature’s bounty you may not have heard of it just yet and you’re in for a real treat. This is one herb that should be in everyone’s herbal medicine cabinet.

It actually STOPS diarrhea. Ha! Bet you were thinking the opposite!

Slippery Elm is an emollient (softening and soothing), demulcent (used especially to relieve pain in inflamed or irritated mucous membranes), pectoral (muscle or organ of the chest), nutritive (nourishing), expectorant (promotes the secretion or expulsion of phlegm, mucus, or other matter from the respiratory tract), diuretic (increases the discharge of urine), slightly astringent (draw together or constrict tissue), and tonic (agent that restores and/or increases body tone). And there’s more! It’s great for sore throats, wonderful as a poultice to reduce swelling and pain, soothes and softens skin, mucous membranes and more.

It truly is one of the most valuable herbal medicines.

“It possesses and abundant mucilage which will soothe irritation, disperse inflammation, draw out impurities, heal rapidly and greatly strengthen. It is especially soothing and healing to irritated and inflamed surfaces, the various mucous membranes internally, or wounds, burns, chapped skin, etc. Externally it is most beneficial for inflammatory conditions of the stomach, lungs, intestines and urinary organs.

The powder made into a mucilage beverage or gruel is a bland and nutritive food for babies, thus an excellent weaning food. It is also wonderful for the elderly or convalescents; it posses as much nutrition as oatmeal, though it is much easier on the system and is an excellent sustaining food. The gruel is a valuable remedy in all cases of weakness, pulmonary complaints, stomach inflammation, lung hemorrhage, etc. It is especially efficient in absorbing noxious gasses and neutralizing any acidity in the stomach. Because of its mucilaginous nature, it is easy to assimilate and eliminate. Its action is so gentle that it can be retained by delicate stomachs when other substances are rejected. It is wonderful for checking infant diarrhea.

As a poultice, slippery elm is one of the greatest remedies for soothing injured or inflamed parts, and also provides the elements for speedy healing and strengthening of the tissue.” quote is  from the fantastic book, School of Natural Healing by Dr. John R. Christopher, pg 366

The uses and benefits of Slippery Elm go on for seven more pages!

It’s a survival food. It’s an herbal medicine. It’s fairly inexpensive (I personally like Mountain Rose Herbs, but you can probably get it at your local health food store).

I needed some today, but am out of the powder so I took some throat lozenges and using my handy mortar and pestle mashed several and added a little water to make a paste. It worked, but I think I’ll order some powder just to have on hand. And by the way, the inserted photos above are NOT Slippery Elm. Slippery Elm made into a paste looks like mud, but feels like heaven.

Rising Food Prices?

Ya know, we’ve broken record high temperatures and news reports are saying the mid-west has dust-bowl like conditions. Crops are not producing as expected which is going to raise the price of food. It may even skyrocket to where basic necessities are unaffordable for the average person, especially those on fixed incomes.

I hope I am wrong.

But, why not pick up extra cans of food now? Especially the stuff on sale. Canned goods are not the most nutritious, but they will keep for quite a while. Bags of beans, bags of rice, whatever YOU like. These things could become lifesavers over the coming months. And if I am wrong and prices don’t go through the roof, you’ll have some extra on hand for that unexpected company that may come knocking on your door. Remember to get extra cans of pet food, too.

These are interesting and unpredictable times. It’s best to be prepared. Wouldn’t hurt to freshen your first aid kit, too.

Monday Morning

Wow! What a difference a day makes. The energy shift is almost palpable!

The Moon has moved into Capricorn and will conjunct Pluto this afternoon at 1:03 pm (EDT) lighting up the Pluto/Uranus square once again. Electrifying!

But the let’s-take-care-of-business Capricorn Moon (ruled by no foolishness Saturn)

will help ground that energy and make it quite useable.

The Royal Leo Sun is heading for a trine with firey Uranus (in Aires) this evening.

Lots of Fire Energy today, cooled by the level headed Saturn ruled Moon – which is a really good thing today!

It’s an unusually awesome combination – that electrical energy that is always Uranus plus the firey Leo Sun and the deep power of Pluto in Capricorn lit up by its meeting today with the Capricorn Moon.

Lots of energy, but not that out of control stuff that we’ve seen in the past few weeks (I hope). There may be a few surprises in store, though.

Can you say “Change”?

One more thing…..Every planet orbits the Sun. Every planet with the exception of Uranus rotates on their invisible axis as they make their way around our sun in the the solar system we call home. Uranus rolls around the Sun like a ball. It just *has* to be different! Which is why I love it.

Did you know that the origin of jewelry was to enhance ones energy field? Certain stones and metals have positive effects on the wearer. At the same time certain stones have a debilitating effect on the wearer. It depends on your unique make-up.

There are wonderful books on the historical uses of many stones available and there’s also the internet. These serve as guidelines in the beginning. You may find that you develop your own relationship with various stones quite different from anyone else – as it should be.

One way to determine whether or not your favorite earrings, necklace or bracelet are bolstering your energy field is to energy test (video coming soon!) whether or not it strengthens or weakens you. In the meantime pay attention to how your day goes whenever you’re wearing your favorite piece.

One of my current favorites is Jade. When I put on my two simple jade bracelets a sense of calm and serenity wash over me. I’m able to think more clearly and feel more grounded. Right now, Jade and I are working well together. There will come a time when I put them away for a while and move to something else, but right now I reach for my bracelets along with my glasses in the morning. It takes me about 5-10 minutes to fully feel their effect.

Through out history Jade has been a popular healing stone. It’s reputed to support the heart, hips, kidney and spleen. It was one of the ancient stones of prosperity and was used for protection. For me, it brings a sense of calmness and I feel more grounded.

Another VOC Moon!

Hmmm….The writer’s block gates seemed to fly open this morning as I awoke. I wonder how this will play out.

Today the Moon is once again Void of Course all day. A Void of Course Moon means that the Moon doesn’t make any more exact (major) aspects before it changes signs. So what, right? It’s unusual because we just finished a l.o.n.g. VOC Moon this past Wednesday when the Moon left Libra and entered Scorpio. A Scorpio Moon is usually intense (as you would expect from Scorpio). But when it’s VOC it loses it’s power no matter what sign it’s in. It just kinda hangs there. If you’ve been feeling a lack of motivation or listless or just want to sleep a lot more than usual over the past few days and can’t figure out why, then good for you! You’re in tune with the Cosmos.

When the Moon is VOC it is NOT a good time to start anything new because it will likely not come to fruition. It’s certainly not a good time to start a business nor would you want to get married on a VOC Moon. It’s kinda the “meh” stage of the Moon.

Why is this a topic? Well, a VOC Moon is not unusual. They happened frequently for anywhere from a few minutes to a couple of hours. What IS unusual is the length of time it has stayed Void recently. This Scorpio Moon is VOC for about 30 hours, but don’t worry. As with everything here in the physical, nothing lasts forever and the Moon moves into Sagittarius at 1:18 AM (EDT) Saturday the 28th.

I suggest that you experiment with this for yourself and see how it affects YOU (there are many Moon VOC calendars available for free on line – just google Void of Course Moon Calendar). I’m suggesting this because nothing seems to be working the way it used to or is supposed to! It seems that the paradigms are changing and we’re struggling to keep up. Have you noticed it?

For me personally, when the Moon is VOC, it seems as if time stands still. It reminds me of when I’m walking through the woods and suddenly I notice the silence – no birds, no squirrels scurrying hardly any bugs buzzing. That silence gives me pause.

New Moon In Cancer Tonight

For those who love ceremony new moons are one of the most wonderful times to celebrate. The energy of the new moon is optimistic, new beginnings. It is a time to plant the seeds of our wishes, hopes and dreams that we want to nurture and bring into our lives.

New moons are when the Sun and Moon join together in their eternal celestial dance through the heavens and she becomes almost invisible. Celebrating the phases of the moon is as ancient as humanity itself. It is a time to reconnect to the natural cycles of life. The dark of the moon is symbolic of the womb.

You can celebrate alone or with friends. It can be as simple as lighting a birthday candle, no candle or as many candles as you want. It can be as elaborate and beautiful – or as simple – as you want to make it. Make it yours.

This new moon tonight is in the nurturing sign of Cancer, the most powerful of the water signs (Cardinal signs initiate action and Cancer is the cardinal water sign). Cancer moons are very fruitful. The old timers knew to plant their seeds in the ground on an increasing light moon (the time from new to full) and when the moon is a fertile sign (an earth sign or a water sign) for the best results. Moon in Cancer is one of the best planting moons.

We can do the same thing for our dreams hopes and wishes. This is a wonderful time to make and plant your own personal seedling.

For my ceremony I light a few candles that I use only for New Moon Ceremonies. I have a piece of paper and a pen at hand and write down with as much detail as possible, the things I’d like to see manifest in my life. When I’ve finished writing, I look over and revise my list for a while. The old adage of be careful what you ask for comes into play here. I do not recommend asking for anything that involves a specific person without their express permission, no matter how good your intentions are or anything that could possibly harm another. Remember: this is about YOU.

When I’m satisfied with the list I fold the paper several times and sit quietly with the energy until the ceremony feels complete.

Around the time the new moon is exact, I like to go outside, dig a small hole and gently plant my new little seedling (the folded piece of paper I wrote on) in the ground. No worries. It doesn’t have to be exactly at the time of the new moon. There is a three-day grace period on either side of its exact moment, but the closer to the time of the new moon, the stronger the energy and the more magical it feels.

The new moon is exact at 12:24 AM Eastern July 19th/ 9:24 PM Pacific July 18th . If you’re on the East Coast and reading this on Wednesday, it’s tonite!
